The Talkin' Sleep Approach

Relationship Supported Sleep™

Sleep doesn’t come from pages of archaic sleep training nonsense. And let’s be real, that was never a solution for children, just tired vulnerable parents. Plus, that baby in the book was never the child in your arms, full of personality and individuality.

So we’re turning the tables and helping families like yours find peaceful nights through what actually matters: relationships, reality, and real developmental science.

Every piece and experience of our lives molds our decisions–the way we perceive struggles, find solutions, and connect with others.

Everything.

So why would helping our kiddos learn how to navigate this world be any different?

Your child is a tiny human who is just learning about this world. Every day is a new and exciting discovery. Whether they are 4 days, 4 months, or 4 years old, their developing brain, nervous system, and relationship with you are all shaping how they experience the world. Including how they sleep.

That’s why quick fixes and band-aid solutions rarely stick. Sleep isn’t just a behaviour to fix. It shifts as your child grows, as their needs change, and as your family evolves. And when you’re handed a rigid method that ignores all of that, it’s no wonder it doesn’t work — and no wonder you’re left wondering if you’re the problem.

That’s where Talkin’ Sleep comes in. We look at the whole picture: your child’s development, their ability to regulate, and the relationship at the centre of it all. Then we help you understand what’s actually driving your family’s sleep struggles and build something that genuinely fits.

Relationship Supported Sleep™

What is Relationship-Supported Sleep™?

Relationship-Supported Sleep™ is the framework at the heart of everything we do at Talkin’ Sleep. It’s a developmental and regulation-based approach to sleep — which is a fancy way of saying we look at your child as a whole person, in the context of your real life, not just a sleep problem to solve.

Most sleep advice zeroes in on their behaviour. What time your baby goes down, how long you let them cry, how long they slept before they cried for you. But behaviour is just the surface. Underneath it, there are three core systems quietly running the show:

Development

Sleep changes constantly because your child is constantly changing. Brain maturation, temperament, and developmental leaps all shape what your child needs for good sleep and what it looks like at any given stage.

Regulation

Your child's nervous system, physical and emotional comfort, their senses, their feeding needs, their daily rhythms, their stimulation needs, and their ability to settle and transition into sleep all play a role in how nights actually go.

Relationship

The connection between you and your child isn't separate from sleep. It's central to it. Your relationship, your own wellbeing, your family environment, as well as the trust between you, create the sense of safety and security required for settled sleep.

When sleep is struggling, it's usually because one or more of these systems is out of balance.

We also take into account possible physical contributors like discomfort, illness, and nutritional factors, because sometimes the answer isn’t behavioral at all. When the real source of the struggle is identified and supported, sleep becomes more settled. And more importantly, it stays that way, because it was built around your child and your family, not borrowed from someone else’s.

The goal isn’t to hand you a method. It’s to help you become the expert on your own kid, so you can navigate each new problem or developmental phase with ease and confidence.

Why Parents Love Relationship-Supported Sleep

RSS isn’t for every family. It’s for the ones who already sense that the conventional approach isn’t right for their child, and are looking for something that actually honors who their child is and works.

Parents who could never do cry it out

Not because they lack the resolve, but because every instinct they have says it isn't right for their child. RSS gives those parents a framework that works with your instincts, not against them.

Parents who want to understand the why

Rules without reasoning don't stick. Families who want to genuinely understand what is driving their child's sleep — and why certain strategies work while others don't — thrive in this approach.

Parents who want to trust their gut but keep second-guessing themselves

Your instincts are data. RSS gives you structure, so you stop second-guessing yourself and start using what you already know.

Parents whose children experience the world a little differently

Children who experience the world differently deserve a sleep approach that reflects that. RSS is built around the individual child, their nervous system, their temperament, their sensory experience, their individual needs. Which makes it a natural fit for families navigating stress, sensitivity, neurodivergence, health or mental health needs.

Cycle breakers and parents recovering from their childhood

If the way you were raised isn't the way you want to raise your child, this approach meets you there. There is no rigidity here, no punishment, no ignoring needs. Just a relationship-first path forward.

Relationship-Supported Sleep™ wasn't born in a vacuum, or a world of hypotheticals.

It was born from determination — a new mom and a child and family therapist who went looking for something that didn't exist yet. A real alternative to the archaic, and often harmful, sleep and development advice that parents are handed by default.

Built From Real Experience, Clinical Expertise, and an Unwavering Belief in Parental Intuition.

When my first baby was born, I was already trained in infant and child mental health (that’s babies and young kids social emotional development and behaviour). I knew the research. I knew how babies develop. I knew what they needed for resilience and positive long-term outcomes. And I still fell apart.

I tried every schedule. I unlatched when everyone said nursing to sleep was a bad habit. I googled at 3am. I second-guessed every instinct I had. The same instincts I had spent years helping other parents trust. And each time something didn’t work, I felt a little more like I was failing him.

At four months postpartum, the sleep deprivation landed me in the hospital. That was my line in the sand.

I struggled for a little while longer. I went to my in-laws house and got 6 glorious uninterrupted hours of sleep. I could already think a little more clearly. From that point I stopped chasing the perfect schedule or magic sleep tip and went back to what I actually knew: infant development, nervous system regulation, and the relationship between a parent and child. What became clear is that sleep cannot be separated from those things. No schedule was ever going to fix what a schedule wasn’t causing.

That experience, combined with over a decade of supporting families clinically with sleep without behavioural sleep training methods, is what Relationship-Supported Sleep™ is built on.

Five Elements. One complete picture.

Every child is different. Every family is different. That’s not a disclaimer, it’s the foundation of everything we do. Our approach is built around five interconnected elements that together create a complete picture of your child’s sleep and your family’s needs.

Core Needs of Child

Sleep is shaped by your child's development, temperament, and nervous system, not just their behaviour at bedtime. Understanding what your baby actually needs at each stage changes everything.

Core Needs of Parents

Your sleep, your wellbeing, and your capacity matter just as much as your child's. A sustainable solution has to work for the whole family, without sacrificing one for the other.

Intuition-Led Strategies

You know your child better than any book or honestly, professional does. Our approach gives you the framework to trust that knowledge and use it, rather than override it with someone else's rules.

Shared Connection and Relationship

The bond between you and your child isn't separate from sleep. It's central to it. Secure connection creates the emotional safety that supports regulation, resilience, and easier more settled nights.

Science-Based Parenting Tools

Our guidance draws on up-todate developmental psychology, sleep science, infant and child mental health, and relationship-focused therapies, so the strategies you're given are grounded in how children and healthy relationships actually develop.

The Best Time to Learn Is Before You Feel a Mental Breakdown Coming

RSS works when families are in crisis. But it works best before they get there.

Learning how sleep actually develops and building your toolkit early means you’re responding from a place of understanding rather than panic and desperation. You’re making decisions with clarity instead of running on empty at 3am wondering what you’re doing wrong.

Nobody learns well in survival mode. My Sleep Roadmap is designed to help you navigate each stage, so when hard nights come, and they will, you already know what to do.

My Sleep Roadmap

Start with the foundation.

My Sleep Roadmap is where most families begin. It's self-paced, accessible, personalized, and built around the full RSS framework so you can start understanding your child's sleep on your own terms.

Rather have someone in your corner?

If you learn best with direct, personal guidance, the Talkin' Sleep Clinic offers 1:1 consultations built around the same RSS framework, with Valerie’s team working with you every step of the way.
